Tritons v Stallions Possible OC Decider

This weekend may not be the weekend that decides everything in the Orange County division of SoCal's Varsity White competition, but it will answer plenty of questions.

Two teams, the San Clemente Tritons and San Juan, sit at 2-0 right now, and they play each other this weekend. Both teams have defeated Dana Hills and Servite in previous weekends - Tritons 30-0 over Servite and 10-7 over Dana Hills; San Juan 21-5 over Servite and 28-24 over Dana Hills. The winner should be in command of the division after this weekend.

This has been a good start for the San Juan Stallions, which is in its first season. They only have 21 players, and 11 are completely new to the game.

"The whole squad plays together and follows our simple approach to the game - everyone has been outstanding at some point," said Head Coach Mark Pattinson. "We are lucky to have some good athletes."

Pattinson said he has broken down the game to simple ideas - go forward, support each other, and continuity.

"We have played a lot of structured touch since day one, so the boys understand about creating an advantage and then exploiting the advantage," said Pattinson. "I think we do these well and have been able to come out ahead at the end of each game."

Pattinson said the team's inexperience has led to some silly penalties, and he's like to cut those out. The Stallions need to improve their lineout, but they haven't had much time to add fancy options.

Meanwhile, Tritons Coach Stuart Proctor says this will indeed be a massive barnburner of a game, and one with event more on the line than is initially apparent.

"We have a game plan for tomorrow night, and I feel confident," said Proctor. "Our boys are right up for the challenge."

The Tritons have benefited from the arrival of prop Geovanni Serrano, who has solidified the front row, while several other young players, such as JV captain Anthony Nolfo, have started pushing for Varsity starting spots.

This game will also be the deciding clash on a three-game challenge trophy between San Clemente, Dana Hills, and San Juan - the three teams all chipped in for a trophy as the high schools all feed the South OC San Clemente Gators club team and are all in the same school district. But while this is a decide for that challenge trophy, and will put somebody at 3-0, it's not the end of things. Everyone is watching Los Alamitos. Los Alamitos has logged three wins so far but non in league play, and so this week's game between Los Alamitos and Dana Hills is a big one. Dana Hills may be 0-2, but their two losses have been by a total of seven points - they are far from an easy out. If Los Alamitos wins that game, they will mark themselves as serious contenders.
