Having both beaten the Rugby Texas defending champion, The Woodlands and the Katy Barbarians met this weekend.

In a tight game that could have gone either way, The Woodlands emerged 30-26 victors.

Katy continued to get good work from center Josh Schnell, who has been a try-scoring machine. and Paul Burgogne in the backs and Simon Cormack in the forwards have been outstanding. However, Woodlands kept Katy to only three tries (one converted) and three penalty goals - basically enough in check to win it.

Katy put Woodlands under pressure early and led 6-0 thanks to two penalty goals. But Woodlands replied with a try to come within a point, and then took the lead at 28 minutes with a penalty goal. Katy’s first try of the day, just before halftime, made it 11-8 Barbarians at the break.

In the second half, Woodlands started on the front foot and scored to retake the lead at 13-11, only for Katy to go in front with another penalty. Once again the lead changed hands, as Woodlands scored under the posts, and with the conversion led 20-14. Katy put the pressure back on and led 21-20. Once again, Woodlands scored a converted try, and now the lead changed hands for the eighth time. And then with four minutes left, Woodlands got a penalty inside the Katy half and kicked it to make it a two-score game at 30-21. Katy scored one more in the dying seconds, but Woodlands held on.

“The game was as good as any final we have played and was hard fought by both sides from start to finish,” said Woodlands Head Coach Phil Beck.

“It was a really exciting match, and great to be a part of,” said Katy Head Coach Ryan Marshall. “At least we were able to get a close-loss bonus point.”

Also in action this weekend, Lake Travis defeated Rock Rugby 56-0. Zach Bell, Gabs Escalante, Anthony Mollo, Dylan Briscoe, Connor Hawley, Blake Dollar, and Carson Pepe all scored tries for Lake Travis.

And Cy Fair pulled off a notable victory in taking down St. Thomas 38-15. It was a down evening for St. Thomas, but Cy Fair played very well, working a snappy backline attack.
