Stony Brook Wins Key Empire Clash

Stony Brook took a big step toward winning the Empire Men's DI Conference with a 24-17 defeat of #27 and previously undefeated Colgate.

The #32 Sea Wolves moved to 3-0 in the conference, and while Coglate remains in 1st place thanks to having played one more game, Stony Brook now has beaten the two teams closest in the Empire. Stony Brook raced out to a 19-0 lead in the first half, but the second half was much more Colgate's. Colgate took the opening kickoff of the second half, worked it through the hands and broke three tackles to score. That try turned the momentum and Colgate scored two more tries to make it 19-17 with time winding down.

Then Phil Salter scored for Stony Brook on a quick tap, and that sealed it.

"Our forwards played exceptionaly well," said Stony Brook Head Coach Jerry Mirro. "Our backs have a lot of pace and talent but we're just not clicking yet."

Once again, prop Jimmy Sheridan was a force, while for Colgate, Head Coach David Chapman lamented two key chances inside the Stony Brook 22 that could have turned the tide.
