Southern Conference Latest

John Tate IV in for one of his two tries.

In another brutal and well played match in the Southern Conference's Eastern Division, ECU sewed up the #1 seed over a game Coastal Carolina side, 25-12.

The match was a war of attrition in the pack and ECU prevailed with overwhelming control of possession.

Coastal had numerous breakaway runs but the swarming ECU defense was there to tackle and stop the break. The difference in the match was the ECU dominance in possession and a more organized back line that took advantage of the ball when it came their way.

Three out of the four semifinalists have already locked down their spots and are preparing for their playoff runs. UNCC finished as the #1 seed in the Western Division and will play host to either Coastal Carolina or the Citadel depending on the outcome of the matches this weekend. ECU finished as the #1 seed in the Eastern Division and will play host to the defending SRC 15s Champion and National 15s runner-up Furman University who finished as the second seed in the Western Division.

Citadel hosted the Tar heels of UNC. The Tar Heels came into the Citadel with an improving record and hoping to be a spoiler to the Citadels chances of a playoff spot.

The Bulldogs were very stingy especially on the defense and lit it up offensively. The Citadel routed the Tar heels 63-0. Both the Citadel and Coastal have lost to Eastern Carolina. The Citadel and Coastal played to a 0-0 tie. The Bulldogs scored early and often. Freshman Ian Butler scored on an impressive 45 meter try at the 4:05 mark and again at the 10:31 mark. The forwards dominated making the ball get out to backline where they exploited the UNC defense. The Bulldog pack won 66 of their offensive rucks while only giving up one and won 20 out of 38 of UNC's rucks. A host of Bulldog Backs scored twice. Ruffus scored twice, Rourke as well. Tghthead prop Smolenski dotted it down twice.

The fourth and final spot in the SRC Semi Finals is still up for grabs between Coastal Carolina and the Citadel. If Coastal Carolina is able to win theirmatch against UNCW with a Bonus Point, and gives up less than 33 points, the spot is theirs. Anything less than that and the idle Citadel Bulldogs who are sitting on 22 table points would seize that final spot. Whomever ends up claiming the number 2 seed in the Eastern Division will be heading to Charlotte for date with the inform UNCC 49’ers.
