SoCal Ramps Up Before Break

Just before the Christmas break, the Southern California Boys HS leagues get a league game in.

Varsity Red

Teams from the Varsity Red (100% single-school and school-supported), have been warming up, with Del Norte logging a 46-17 victory over Westview last week. La Costa Canyon also won in a warmup, 40-22 over Jaguars, while St. Augustine won comfortably over Santiago.

But when it's in-league against in-league things will be a little different, and this highly competitive division is usually good for a few surprises.

Del Norte hosts St. Augustine

LCC is at SC Tritons

Poway is at Torrey Pines

The Del Norte v St. Augustine game is perhaps the hardest to handicap.

The Varsity Red also has a LA division now, and most of those teams are idle. However, View Park Prep takes on the ERHS Mustangs in a non-league game. The Mustangs are in the Varsity White division, and that group is also active going into the break.

Inland

The Mustangs play View Park, Murrieta Valley is at Dana Hills, and Great Oak hosts the Stallions. All are non-league games.

LA

A very powerful Wilson HS opens up its league season against St. Anthony. Santa Fe is at Carson HS. Those are the four teams in the LA division. Wilson is the heavy favorite going into the season.

OC Coast

Four of the six teams play league games, with Los Alamitos hosting JSerra, and Servite at Saddleback. Los Al was the big winner last season and most of their starters from 2016-17 are back, so watch out for them. Dana Hills, as mentioned above, has a non-league game, as does SJS.

San Diego North

A couple of league games started last week in SD North, with San Pasqual building on last year's solid showing with a win over Fallbrook (24-10), and San Marcos 40-38 over Mira Mesa. Fallbrook looks to rebound against San Marcos this week, while Carlsbad (also looking strong last season) visits Jaguars Rugby, and Mira Mesa takes on San Pasqual.

San Diego South

La Jolla started strong last week and takes on the might of University City this weekend in an early pivotal game. Point Loma is at the Norsemen, and Westview at Coronado.
