Santa Monica Notches Another Big Win

Dylan James runs for space in Saturday's win over Belmont Shore.

The Santa Monica Dolphins continued their unbeaten run by thumping Belmont Shore 52-0 this weekend in Southern California boys HS play.

Belmont came into his game having finishing 2nd in the Santa Clarita Kickoff tournament and a decisive win over Empire in the league, but the Dolphins came into the game having just won the Fullerton Tournament and looking to go 4-0 in SoCal.

The first ten minutes the teams were deadlocked, but then Santa Monica broke the tie. On a penalty, flyhalf John Conor Shalloe put in a nice, deep kick for touch inside Belmont Shore’s 22. The Dolphins rolling maul from the lineout proved too strong for the Belmont defense, and Benny Gonda drove the ball into the corner for Santa Monica’s first try of the game. Thereafter the Dolphins moved up a gear and before the half tries from Oscar Ockomichalak, a thunderous run from brother Jeremy Ockomichalak, and a scorching individual run from Dylan James saw the half time score at 24-0.

The second half was dominated by the Dolphins pack, which controlled the ball, and was backed up by penetrating runs from the Dolphins backline. this set up tries from wing Ryan Suggs, Shalloe at flyhalf, and fullback Cole McPherson. The day was rounded off by a spectacularly athletic run from lock and newcomer Matthew Yu, who offloaded to Jeremy Ockomichalak, who finished it off.

Shalloe added six of eight conversions for a 52-0 shutout, Santa Monica's third of the season.
