Rugby Northeast Latest - Bentley, Lowell, Providence

Bentley players hug it out.

Bentley continues on their winning ways with a 19-12 defeat of Roger Williams in the Rugby Northeast DII conference.

Head Coach Brian Pendergrast lauded his team’s composure and conditioning for holding off the 1-0 RWU squad.

Roger Williams scored first in the game, but a try from Bentley's Sean Clohisy tied it, and then center JP O'Neill raced in to put Bentley ahead. RWU tied it up just before halftime 12-12.

In the second half, both teams had trouble finding space, but eventually John Tascione went over for the try, converted by Niall Collins, to win it for Bentley.

Meanwhile, the other team Bentley beat, UMass-Lowell, rebounded with an impressive 51-19 victory over Bryant. With the league season moved one week earlier to accommodate national playoffs, Lowell had just a week to prepare for Bentley, and it hurt them, said Head Coach Josh Skinner.

“That game was the first time in four years that we hadn’t scored a try,” said Skinner. “Bentley played well but we also made a lot of errors, and we fixed a lot of those.”

Many of those errors were in the lineout, which functioned much better for Lowell this week against Bryant. In addition, led by center Will Weinhold and flanker Mark Chandler, “we tackled on the front foot a lot more today.”

Providence College defeated Southern Connecticut State 29-13 to move to 2-0 alongside Bentley. SCSU was 1-0 going into that match, and so with two weeks done in the conference only two teams - Bentley and Providence - have no losses.
