Wheeling Jesuit defeated Iona (see report here) in the opening weekend of the Rugby East Conference.

Also winning were the Black Knights of the US Military Academy, the defending conference champions, and Penn State.

Penn State started their season against an improved St. Bonavanture and had to work for it, winning 23-10. After both teams missed penalty kick attempts, Penn State took a 5-0 lead with a try from Tyler May. May added a second to give his side a 10-0 lead, but Bonnies replied with a try from Stephvan Tanner just before the break to make it 10-7 after Dan Dillon’s conversion. SBU tied the game early in the second half with a penalty kick from Dillon, but tries from Michael Eife and Tyler Kio, sandwiched around a Jimmy Ronan penalty, put the game away from the Nittany Lions 23-10. They got the four-try bonus point, but no conversions.

Army shut out Buffalo 48-0. Luke Heun, captain Donny Goff, Pete Basnight, Andrew Fargo, John Sproul and Carm Hargis were among the scorers for West Point. The Black Knights provided an emphatic first conference win for new Head Coach Matt Sherman.

Penn State also has a new Head Coach in Blake Burdette.
