Pennsylvania Crowns HS and Youth Champs

Rugby Pennsylvania crowned their state champions this weekend, with a surprise or two along the way.

Played in Mechanicsburg and Conshohocken, Pa, the championships covered two days, with semifinals and finals in Boys HS Club, Boys Varsity, Girls DI and DII, and Juniors and Youth.

In the girls brackets, Moon Area looked very impressive in the DII competition. Kiski Valley was pretty good, too, beating West Chester 61-0 in the semis. But Moon Area went one better, shutting out West Shore 50-0 in the semis, and turning around to keep Kiski Valley scoreless 43-0 in the final.

In the DI Final, the Valkyries defeated Downingtown 29-17 to take the state title.

In the Boys brackets, West Shore and Media United both won in the Club Semis - West Shore over Kutztown, and Media over Elzabethtown. That set up Sunday's final, and Media defeated West Shore 42-29.

In the Single-School bracket, Cumberland Valley had been looking like the best team in the competition. And on Saturday thy looked pretty good, beating Malvern Prep 36-17. But Gregory the Great, which has been slowly putting in some impressive results, handled West Allegheny 46-12.

That set up the final, and in a tight, tense encounter, GGA pulled off the upset 23-21 over Cumberland Valley.

Media won the Junior Final 25-17 over Cumberland Valley. Berks County beat Conestoga 19-15 in the Youth Final.
