Norwich 51-0 in 7s

Co-captain Emily Oor has played in all 51 wins.

Norwich women won its third 7s tournament of the spring season, outscoring opponents 171-7 en route to the Scott Milley 7s title at the University of New Hampshire. But that points differential isn't even the most impressive stat; the Cadets have never lost a 7s game – ever – and boast a 51-0 all-time record.

The USA Rugby 7s Championship launched in fall 2011, and that’s when Norwich started playing 7s – barely. Fall 15s playoffs extended into November, so the Cadets had a few weeks to fit in some 7s training before the December event. That’s how it evolved for the next three years, but fortunately for the Vermonters, the team’s style of play translated to 7s easily. Norwich spreads the ball quickly, has good team speed, and sports solid tackling – in other words, the Cadets were built for 7s.

Norwich has won all three of the USA Rugby 7s Championship titles. When the team joined ACRA, the Cadets focused its spring on 7s and went on to win the league’s first DI 7s championship last May. The team is now in its second 7s-only spring, and that focus is paying off significantly.

“I have actually played in every single one of our 7s games,” co-captain Emily Oor said in her fourth year at Norwich. “As for our 7s game, it has definitely improved and developed, and I do believe that the game is better for it now. We have a fluid game plan – one that we’ve developed each year so it works for the players we have to put out on the field.”

Norwich has been fielding two teams in each tournament. There are plenty of familiar names on the starting side, and the players take turns sharing the leaderboard. Scoring five tries each: Oor and freshman Ilona Maher on Saturday; All American Hannah Bell and Sophie Mundell at Siena 7s; and Maher and Emily Colesworthy at the Harvard 7s. Maher and her 10 tries is one of two freshmen making regular appearances on the starting side; Frankie Sands has also been a good contributor.

In the Northeast, Norwich isn’t facing much resistance, outscoring opponents 463-31 over three tournaments. Perhaps that will change when the Cadets head to Brown University next weekend for the Varsity 7s. There’s also the St. Michael’s 7s and the program’s own Chris Munn 7s in late April.

“There’s are new challenges at every tournament, and we have continually been able to overcome them and play our best every time we step onto the field,” Oor said. “Right now there is quite a discrepancy between teams on the field, which I believe comes from playing time, but it is apparent that the teams that have been playing and taking part in the full season of 7s have been improving alongside us.”

At present, Norwich’s schedule culminates at the ACRA 7s Championship on May 2-3 at West Point, N.Y. That means there are approximately 20 games left in the season, so this undefeated record could become even more impressive.
