Division II in high school rugby can be a hit-or-miss proposition; some of those leagues are for new teams, or for teams that are struggling with numbers, but in Northern California it’s a serious competition, and some excellent teams are coming out of there.

Among them are the Elsie Allen Lobos, who remain unbeaten and are going to the Boys HS Rugby National Championships.

Watch out also for De La Salle, Chico, Sacramento Eagles, SacPD PAL, Santa Rosa, and Buchanan.

All of those teams are unbeaten in league play.

Elsie Allen beat Berkeley 46-0 two weeks ago with two tries and 16 points from Epi Feoko, and two from Augie Buschman. This past weekend, the Lobos beat Napa 22-0 with tries from Cameron Basile, Joshua Kauvesi, David Klaut, Jaden Groesbeck.

Santa Rosa beat North Bay this past weekend to move to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the league. Tanner Mendoza, Mark Boschetti, Rylee Formway, and Wyatt Darien all scored two tries for Rosa.

De La Salle is working through a nice season, also. After beating Bishop O’Dowd 45-19 this past weekend, De La Salle is now 4-0 in league play. Inside center Josh Serafino has been brilliant for De La Salle, making smart decisions and showcasing some impressive tackling skills. He’s a big leader for them. Prop Kevin Tuholski makes the fain line on almost every run, and plays well over the ball and on defense.

Flanker Robbie Knoll has been key in the linouts and in open field, while Sosaia T’oto’o is as good a rucker as you want to see.

With Buchanan at 5-0, Chico 3-0, Sac Eagles 2-0, and SacPD PAL 4-0, the DII playoffs promise to be competitive.

Buchanan beat San Joaquin 35-29 in a tough one to stay undefeated. That result, plus their 17-0 shutout of Bullard March 4, put Buchanan in good shape. SacPD beat Elk Grove 41-15 last week and have one more league game left, Sierra Foothills. Their key result was a 22-14 win over Cougars Feb 18. The Eagles slammed Gridley 99-0 last week, and take on Christian Brothers this week. The game to watch may well be Sac Eagles v Chico April 1.

Santa Rosa faces Elsie Allen Friday in a key game in the Redwood Conference. Da La Salle has Pleasanton and Clayton Valley left.
