Men DI College 7s Latest - Day One

Six teams are undefeated after Day One of the Men's DI bracket in the USA Rugby College 7s Championships.

Defending champs Saint Mary's started in impressive fashion, shutting out Fordham 25-0 and Jams Madison 43-0.

"Against Fordham I think we did a good job of turning turnovers into tries pretty quickly," said Saint Mary's 7s Coach Joey Reavey. "We punished a lot of mistakes. Against JMU we started them of possession and attacked with pretty good pace."

The Gaels did well to win their restarts, and rotated their players in without a dropoff. Tommy Wallace scored two tries against Fordham, and Ronan Murphy scored two against JMU, but the scoring was evenly distributed as the Gaels rode their momentum from their 15s season into 7s.

Also 2-0 in Pool A is Bowling Green, with tries from Phil Bryant and Ryan Steinmetz getting them past JMU, and Cole Shaffer, Adam Regini, Dominic Charnier, and Nick Ross scoring in a win over Fordham.

Lindenwood also went 2-0, shutting out Stanford 30-0 behind two tries from Michael Baska and tries from Mickey Bateman, Christian Rodriguez, Nick Feakes, and Sam Chapman. The Lions then shut out Wyoming 31-0. Baska scored two more, while Chapman, Jack Desmond, and Christian Rodriguez also touched down. Head Coach Josh Macy credited his team's ability to pressure the opposition on restarts, and moving the ball nicely while using depth to give the Lions time to make decisions.

Grand Canyon opened up with a win, but then tied Stanford to finish the day 1-0-1.

Arkansas is 2-0 in Pool C and in control as everyone else has lost at last once. Th Razorbacks won two qualifiers this spring, and edged Santa Clara 12-7, and Florida International 17-12. Jack Casey scored a try in each game, while Kyle Renner, Cory Jones, and Joshua Beaird also scored.

Davenport and Utah are 2-0 in Pool D. Davenport beat Texas A&M 21-14 as Thomas Cheslek scored with no time lft to break a 14-14 tie. Bryce Gruppen scored twice for the Panthers. Against Kansas State, Davenport started to put it all together and pitched a shutout. Reece Czarnecki scored two tries. Utah beat those same two teams, taking down Kansas State 34-7 with Chad Gough scoring four tries. They then got by Texas A&M 19-14 after falling behind 14-5 in the first half. Caleb Meyer's tries just before the break, with Gough's conversion, made it 14-12. Then Gabe Ruflin's try midway through the second half put them in front. Gough converted, but he was yellow-carded late and the Utes held on shorthanded.

"Some good results from a team with six freshmen," said Utah 7s Coach Mark Drown, who also praised the veteran leadership of Gough, Ruflin, and Meyer. "Freshman Kelsin Pupunu has really stepped up as a playmaker."

Saint Mary's, Bowling Green, Lindenwood, Davenport, and Utah all are through to the quarterfinals. Grand Canyon takes on Lindenwood Saturday, while Stanford plays Wyoming. Stanford still has a shot to get 2nd in that pool.  FIU plays Santa Clara and Ohio State takes on Arkansas. Even though Arkansas is 2-0, they could still be bumped to third if FIU and Ohio State win.
