There was only one game in the Rugby East Saturday, with Kutztown University moving to 2-0 with a 24-5 defeat of St. Bonavanture.

Heavy favorites going into the game, Kutztown encountered a hard-nosed Bonnies squad that didn’t back down and didn’t bother looking at the national rankings. With the conditions wet and cold thanks to the influences of Hurricane Joaquin, possession was at a premium, and St. Bonaventure did a good job to keep more than their share.

“St. Bonaventure played some really good rugby,” said Kutztown Head Coach Gregg Jones. “They were on our goal line several times and it could have been a lot closer. They showed how much joining the Rugby East has helped their program. We didn’t play our best rugby, but we needed a game like this, that put us under pressure. Bonnies had most of the possession and did well to keep it.”

Kutztown, however, was able to strike quickly and got tries from Trent Hensley, Jordan Ghyzel, Alex Faison-Donahoe, and David Snead, all in the first half, to lead 24-0. The Bears then weathered the SBU storm to hold on 24-5.

With that result, and with Army’s 46-36 defeat of Penn State on Friday night, Kutztown jumps to 3rd in the Rugby East. This position is likely temporary, however, as Iona hosts West Virginia on Sunday.
