GNC Girls Report

Northern California swept all but the Boys Middle School bracket in the Great Northwest Challenge high school all-star tournament, including winning both Girls HS competitions.

NorCal swept all eight games of the Girls Varsity and Girls Junior Varsity brackets. In the Varsity competition, NorCal beat the Washington Loggers 37-14 and Rugby Oregon 29-21 in pool play. That set them up for the semifinals, where they hammered Montana 58-0. Southern California, which looked very strong on Day One, had a lot of work to do to get past Oregon.

In the final, NorCal held off SoCal 27-19 to win it all.

Meanwhile, the Northern California girls were even more dominant in the JV level. They beat SoCal 32-10 in their opening game, before having to really work to beat Montana 12-10. But on Sunday a 37-0 rout of Oregon and a forfeit win over the Loggers made it 4-0.

The JV bracket at the GNC was perhaps the strongest of all the girls' JV brackets in the five Regional Cup Tournaments. In the Northeast there were only three JV teams, and the same in the South. The Rocky Mountain Challenge had two girls JV teams, and the Midwest Challenge Cup had none. But in the GNC there were five teams, and the forfeit by Washington notwithstanding, the rest managed to pitch-up for ten games, with Montana doing superbly well, finishing 3-1 for second, with only that 12-10 loss to NorCal to blemish their record.
