Georgia Makes Move in SCRC

It’s still all to play for in the SCRC men’s DIAA conference, and especially for one dark horse in Georgia.

The teams from schools in the SEC may not be allowed say they’re from the SEC, but they know the rivalries. In the SCRC West, Alabama is still in front as the Tide took care of Vanderbilt 40-3 and moved to 4-0. Alabama was an upstart team in 2014, but their confidence is high and they’ve built on that with hard work. The result is four wins, and with a home game against Kentucky and a road game against Mississippi State left on the calendar, they could run the table.

Behind Alabama is Florida, which won a big one 46-17 to put the Gators at 2-2 and in 2nd in the West, good for a playoff spot.

But Florida still has Tennessee to contend with, and a loss there could open the door for Mississippi State. Mississippi State, however, lost at home to Georgia 30-5. That’s the key result this weekend, as Georgia moves to 3-1 in the SCRC East. While Tennessee and South Carolina (both not playing conference games this weekend) are 3-0, both have tough schedules ahead - Tennessee plays at Florida, hosts Georgia, and then visits South Carolina. USC also has to play Auburn and Mississippi State.

Meanwhile Georgia Coach Jesse Posnansky thinks his team has more to give.

“We played OK,” said Posnansky. “I was disappointed with our physicality in the first half. We were not mentally ready. That being said, we played more like ourselves in the second half.”

Blindside flanker James Daniel was strong for the Bulldogs, making key tackles and getting to virtually every breakdown.

“It was his presence at the breakdowns that earned him man of the match,” said the coach. “Other than that we played rather sloppily. Our backs didn't do too much with the ball until late in the game. I'd say the forwards did the bulk of the damage.”

So while there are more games to be played, the one everyone needs to circle on the calendar is Georgia at Tennessee October 24. That game could well decide who of those two teams will make the final four.
