Gamebreakers - HS Boys This Week

Here’s a look at some of the gamebreakers from this past week in Boys HS rugby.

Austen Perona Williams, Fallbrook, Calif.

Williams played flanker and center for Fallbrook as they beat the San Diego Youth Aztecs to clinch their conference in Southern California. Perona was an intense and active flanker and did the same at center in the game.

Soh Nakayama, Greenwich, Conn.

The Greenwich HS scrumhalf was the spark plug for the Greenwich offense as they made the final of the Jesuit Classic. And while Greenwich lost a close game to Gonzaga in the final, Nakayama was a candidate for tournament MVP.

Dante Lopresti, Gonzaga, Md.

The big Gonzaga prop was an active, powerful presence for Gonzaga as they won the Jesuit Classic.

Nick O’Brien, Bixby, Okla.

The flanker for Bixby HS helped his squad win the St. Louis Ruggerfest, going 4-0. O’Brien had a class flanker’s game, cleaning up bad ball, rescuing go-backward situations, and getting his team possession and moving forward.

Sam Benkowski, Edina, Minn.

In the opening weekend of the season in Minnesota, Benkowski emerged as a leader for a young Edina team. Able to play almost anywhere on the field, Benkowski set the tone as a worker and a leader for Edina in their win over STMA.

Max Barb, Notre Dame de La Salette, Ill.

Barb won all of his team's lineouts and many of Brother Rice's in a 45-0 shutout win for La Salette.

Kevin Ndou, Pelham, NY

Pelham is a newly-minted varsity program in New York State, and Ndou helped lead his team to a somewhat surprising win over Fordham Prep.

Alex Spenceley, Cumberland Valley, Pa.

The Cumberland Valley flyhalf kicked a 25-meter penalty goal as time expired to give his squad a tough 18-17 win over Conestoga.

Rory MacLeod, Naples, Fla.

Normally a lock, MacLeod is actually mobile enough and with enough of an engine to move around as a flanker. MacLeod was a physical force and also helped his Naples team get to the breakdown and speed on defense to counter a talented Key Biscayne attack. This resulted in a Naples win, and a berth in the Florida state semis.

Antony Wiley, Granite Bay, Calif.

In the game of the season in Northern California’s multi-school Varsity Gold division, Granite Bay defeated Jesuit 29-25. Wiley scored a key try, capping off a counter from deep within the Granite Bay 22.
