In a tough, hard-hitting game, St. Paul's took on Archbishop Shaw, a team they had beaten 17-10 earlier in the season.

This was another defensive battle. Held at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans, this Deep South championship game featured a two-time regional champion team in Shaw, and a relatively new program in St. Paul's, which hadn't lost a game all season. St. Paul's tried to use their pace to break through and Shaw's defense held. The teams were deadlocked 5-5 at halftime, and 10-10 at the end of regulation. So on to penalty kicks. After each team had five different players attempt penalties from the 22-meter-line, St. Paul's won it, with freshman Nicholas Montreuil slotting the kick that sealed the win.

"We knew it was going to be tough," said Tim Falcon of the overtime. "St Paul's has the number one soccer team in the country. They have shown all season they can kick at goal and up the field."

"No one wants to see a rugby match end in a kicking duel like soccer," said St. Paul's Head Coach Dr. Donald Hart. "These young men played like warriors on both sides. It would have been easier to cut the trophy in half and both walk off the pitch with a piece. Shaw has nothing to hang their heads about."

St Paul's ends the season undefeated and champions of the Deep South in only their second year of competition.
