Comeback Sees UNCW Southern Champions

The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks came back from a 17-0 deficit to beat Coastal Caroline and win the Southern Rugby Conference Sunday.

Coastal ran out to a 17-0 at halftime, but UNCW Coach Jeremy Tominack said the Seahawks did not change their game plan.

“We remained calm,” said Tominack. “We felt what we were doing would work. We told the guys to keep hitting the holes and keep working the game plan. The pack never quit, no one panicked, and we started to score. You’ve got to hand it to the guys, they never quit.”

Tominack said UNCW and Coastal were very even and his team was “a little bit lucky” to win.

Leading the way for Wilmington was flanker Tom McCrimmon, who has been excellent all season. Meanwhile, he was assisted by Cole Schanliec, who was moved to No. 8 because of an injury and set the ton. Meanwhile wing James Hall was moved to scrumhalf midway through the game due to a sin-bin and made some big plays in an unfamiliar position.

Everyone, said Tominack, made big plays.

So both Coastal and UNC-W will move on to the playoffs. See the brackets here.
