The Rugby Colorado playoffs are set to start this coming weekend, with Regis Jesuit coming in as the #1 seed.

All eyes were on whether Regis or East HS would garner the top spot, especially after snow forced the postponement of their game. Finally, last week, the two teams met and Regis emerged 29-5 victors. They followed that up with another snowy game, a 35-0 defeat of Littleton to finish 7-0-1. The only blemish on their league record an opening-day 17-17 tie with Aurora.

East finished 2nd at 7-1, with Colorado Springs at 6-2 and Aurora 5-2-1.

Regis Head Coach Zach Fenoglio said the game against East was much closer than the score shows. In in truth the difference in tries scored was small - two to one. The scoring difference was that versatile back Lou Vera was a perfect 7-for-7 kicking for goal, slotting both conversions and five penalties.

"We have a special group," said Fenoglio. "They're really tight-knit. I told them they have the potential to accomplish great things this season and they are doing whatever they can to be the best."

Against East the Regis team played a smart, well-structured game for the duration, and that's what held East to one the one unconverted try.

Meanwhile, Regis also got two tries from wing Andrew Schlegel, who is slated to play football at Kentucky next year. He was a huge factor on attack, while No. 8 Matt Peppercorn spiced up the forward play with some big runs and led from the front on defense.

"Our forwards played well and they'll need to keep playing well," said Fenoglio. "This is a competitive group of teams in our league. We just have to do what we do and not worry about anyone else."

Regis Jesuit will host 8th-ranked Arapahoe, which is in its first year as a single-school team. Arapahoe finished 1-7 but was very competitive in those games.

East will host #7 Chaparral, who finished 2-6, while Colorado Springs will host PAC (3-5). The big question-mark game may well be the #4 v #5 matchup which sees 4-4 Fort Collins - up fromt DII - at 5-2-1 Aurora.

Even though Aurora finished higher than Colorado Springs, Springs actually beat Aurora in league play, 20-10 on March 12.

All playoff games will be held Friday, May 6.

The DII playoffs are set, as well, and will be held May 7. Monarch, 6-0 in the North, and the Terrors, 9-0 in the South, lead the way there.
