College 7s Tournaments This Weekend

Three college 7s tournaments are set for this weekend, and perhaps the interesting thing to note is that it wasn't that long ago that these sorts of tournaments were begging teams to show ... now they're packed.

The University Oklahoma hosts the Big XII 7s and this is perhaps the smallest of the three. Still it's a good one, with Oklahoma, West Virginia, Arkansas, and North Texas all with serious thoughts on winning the thing:

The Big XII 7s participants are:

Iowa State, Kansas State, Arkansas, Univ. North Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, UNT B, OU B

Also this weekend, the Chesapeake Conference Series enters its second week. This series keeps track of points for conference teams, but the series leading up to the championship event is also open to teams outside of the conference. That's why Bowling Green took the Chesapeake Opener last week.

This week, James Madison University hosts in Harrisonburg, Va. Last week's finalists, Salisbury, won't be there, but JMU will be, as will Mount Saint Mary's (4th last week). Also there's Georgetown, which just (just) missed out on a semifinal spot last week and finished 5th. South Carolina, which won the Scrum for the Cure at Clemson last week, comes in as a non-conference competitor.

And then Middle Tennessee State University hosts the Moosemen 7s. This event shows how useful it can be for Tennessee to border six different states, as teams from eight states will compete. The total number of teams is 16, and they will play four teams of four, with everyone playing at five or six games on the game. It won't be easy.

Mississippi State and Georgia bring two teams each, while the other 12 competitors are: MTSU, Southern Illinois, Ohio State, Purdue, Miami (Ohio), Western Kentucky, Louisville, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Vanderbilt, Alabama, and Lindenwood-Belleville.

There are several teams with a chance to win this. Ohio State has some big plans, Lindenwood-Belleville is looking to make a splash at one or both major end-of-season tournaments, and you cannot count out Alabama or Mississippi State.
