Tulane Celebrates.

In college 7s action this weekend:

Bowling Green won the MAC Conference title, defeating Western Michigan 19-12 in the final. BGSU fell behind 12-0 in the final, but tries from Sean McFarland and Adam Regini tied the game up, and then Nick Ross swooped in on a turnover to score and convert to win the game.

Tulane defeated Mississippi State 17-12 to win the New Orleans 7s.

Tulane, Mississippi State, Spring Hill, and Loyola all won their opening games before meeting each other in the second round. Tulane shut out Spring Hill and MSU downed Loyola. Spring Hill, paced by a try and three conversions from Ryan Flynn, won a back-and-forth game 21-14 to take 3rd.

In the final, Tulane scored early through long-striding Bill Stewart, only to see MSU come back to score twice and take a 12-7 lead - Dentay Daniels keeping his balance nicely to get over for the go-ahead try. In a physical game where teams had trouble getting to space, Stewart finally broke through to tie the game. Late in the second half, Tulane won some worrying possession on a scrum, managed to control it, and sent it out to Austin Cheatwood, who galloped in for the game-winner.

West Virginia won in overtime thanks to a try from Luke Ellis to beat Oklahoma 26-19 in the Big XII 7s. More Here.

In the 1st tournament of the Capital Series, James Madison defeated South Carolina 22-20 in the final. JMU, the defending USA Rugby DII 7s champion, went out to a 22-5 lead in the first half. But the Gamecocks scored right before halftime, and then twice more i the second half. There was time for one more attack, but on a day of astounding comebacks, this one fell just a little short. Against Maryland, USC was down eight with 2:30 left and won.

JMU's Mo Katz was named tournament MVP.

The Citadel in Charleston, SC hosted the 1st leg of the SoCon 7s Series, which will produce a qualifier for the USA Rugby DII 7s championships. UNC Charlotte pipped Furman to win the 13-team event. The results also help re-seeding for the next leg, set for Wake Forest March 19. Furman will host Leg #3 April 2, and the final will be played at East Carolina April 16.

In the SIRC 7s, play continues on Sunday. Here's the latest.
