California Conference Chase is On

Cal Poly huddles up. The Mustangs are now 4-1.

Cal Poly took another step to challenge for 2nd in the California DIA Conference after beating San Diego State 100-0 over the weekend.

Mustangs Head Coach Chris O'Brien wasn't overly celebratory about the result but he did point out that this was an indication of what his side can do in more favorable conditions.

"It was the first game we’ve had on dry soil," said O'Brien, whose team has been hampered by the wet winter on the West Coast (as had everyone). "So it was the first time we’ve been able to put our shape together and we did have a really good attacking shape."

O'Brien added that the Mustangs are at their best when they worry about what they do rather than worrying about the opposition.

Center Coby Baker continues to enjoy excellent form—"each week he takes an extra step," said O'Brien—while captain and flyhalf Jack Marchant is running the team and the attack expertly. The attacking flow goes through Marchant, and at 3-1 Cal Poly is in good shape.

Santa Clara improved to 1-2 after beating UC Santa Cruz 62-17. It was a much improved performance for the Broncos after their loss to Saint Mary's.

"We played fast," said Head Coach Paul Keeler. Fullback Daelen Denenberg scored three tries and center Ben Voelz scored two tries and both were outstanding for Santa Clara. Captain Beji Rogers and Anton Viera, back from injury, led the defensive effort, while quick ruck ball kept UCSC backpedaling.

"We have played better every week," said Keeler. "And the players are starting to show their potential."

UC Davis defeated UC Santa Barbara 29-14 to improve to 2-2 and now in 3rd place. But it's all very close, with UCSB now at 1-1-1 and Santa Clara at 1-2, but with their two losses to Saint Mary's and Cal Poly.
