Cal Over Arizona In PAC

The University of California got two tries from scrumhalf Keanu Andrade and scored 24 in each half to beat Arizona 48-17 in PAC Rugby Conference action this weekend.

In a game between the FloRugby #3 and #9, it was the higher-ranked team that came away victorious.

Freshman Kevin Saunders was brought in to start for Cal and scored the Bears' first try.

"Jaime's been having a great season and I'm just trying to get better every week," said flyhalf Elliott Webb, who was 5-8 in conversions after getting the start in the #10 jersey. .

"It's about trying to learn while trying to help the team at the same time," added Saunders, who started in place of injured Aisea Tongilava. "Aisea is a dynamic runner and I can try to emulate that but I have a lot of hard work ahead of me."

Arizona wing Ryan Hudson intercepted a pass and raced in to score as a reply. Flyhalf Anton Grigoriou converted for a 7-5 Arizona lead. But Cal answered back with a try by prop Kevin Sullivan, and the Bears remained in control the rest of the way.

"We put some new guys into different roles today and I think film will show we've got a lot better rugby still in us," said Sullivan.

Christian Dyer and Thomas Robles also scored for Cal before Dante Week went over for the Wildcats to make it 24-12 at the break. In the second half, Aidan Flynn scored early, and Thomas Spradling and Andrade both went over to make it 41-12. Arizona's Tyler Hansen's try was his team's last of the day before Andrade finished it off.

With the result, Cal defeated its main rival in the PAC Rugby Conference. The Bears will play Arizona State on Monday.
