Cal Looks to UBC Rematch

Cal will be in Vancouver, BC this weekend to look to get a revenge victory over the UBC Thunderbirds and take the two-game series between the two teams.

Cal lost 28-17 in Berkeley in February, but it wasn't a total disaster as the Bears trailed 28-3 late in the game before a series of penalties against the Thunderbirds led to converted two Cal tries in the final three minutes.

Without those tries, the hole Cal has to dig out of would have been imposing indeed.

"We tried to give it our all out there," said prop Damon Wiley after the game. "For us young players, it's anything we can do to contribute. We want to get back to work. The sky's the limit."

Cal missed some very good try-scoring opportunities in that game, and failing to give that last pass on an odd-man rush hurt them.

"We showed a lot of heart and got something in the end," said Jake Goena, who worked with Nathan Becker to set up Drew Gaffney's try. "Our physicality didn't let us down. It was 80 minutes a lot of mental toughness."

OK so on to this weekend's return engagement.

The Cal front row could be comprised of sophomore and former Gonzaga HS All American Jack Iscaro at loosehead prop, and seniors Wade Ogburn at hooker and Tomas Zerbino at tighthead. It would be Iscaro's first "World Cup" selection, while Ogburn made his debut in February as a reserve.

Senior lock Olivier Damas could be making his first "World Cup" start and second trip to British Columbia, having come on as a reserve in 2016. Next to him may be senior Anthony Kosinski, who would be making his first start against UBC. The Bears' back row may see two underclassmen getting their first taste of "World Cup" history in freshman George Salter across from junior Felix Le Merle at the flankers, and sophomore Becker at No. 8.

Senior wing Miles Honens and Evan Coleman are the only projected backline starters who have previously earned that distinction against British Columbia. Sophomore scrumhalf Fawzi Kawash scored a try as a second-half replacement against the 'Birds in February, and fullback Karl Thornton has entered the past two matches against UBC as a replacement. The backs set to make their "World Cup" debuts as starters could also include senior Matt Ternan and freshman Christian Dyer in the midfield, as well as senior Jamie Howells, who would serve as the team's flyhalf and placekicker.

It's unclear who will be selected by the Thunderbirds to send against the Bears on Sunday, considering that UBC has BC Premier League match the previous day at Burnaby Lake.
