Bonus-Point Weekend in DI Northeast

Boston College also beat Boston University.

The Northeast has concluded week two of DI league play, and UConn has secured the top spot in the standings. The team has celebrated both wins at home and will test itself against 1-0 Rhode Island this weekend.

UConn’s Devon Gold and Amanda Lazarus each scored a brace of tries against UMass in the 33-5 victory, while center Jasmine Folch added a five-pointer and flanker Laura Heatherman converted five scores. UMass prop Kathryn Regan prevented the shutout with her side’s lone try.

Next week’s opponent, Rhode Island, earned a bonus-point win against Northeastern, but it was no easy task. The Rams scored five tries to the Huskies’ four, sending Caitlin Heaton (2), Jess McCaughey, Mary O’Connon, and Alison Borowicz over the try line. Northeastern put Sarah Levy, Sami Ernst, Dani Hawryluk, and Ellie Williams into the try zone, but it wasn’t enough in the 27-22 loss. It was enough, however, for a bonus point.

The highlight in terms of rivalry occurred between Boston College and Boston University, but the Eagles’ attack was ready to exert itself after a week-one shutout to UConn. Monica Thorne bagged herself a hat trick, while Sarah Stroehecker followed with two. Courtney Blair and Jenna Moscarelli added five-pointers, and Laura Krivicich slotted five conversions. Like Northeastern, the Terriers were able to score four tries (Paige Stathopolous [2], CaSandra Parkhurst, Abby Yotts) and earn a bonus point, which will come in handy later in the season.

BC and BU are both off next weekend. URI will host UConn in a battle of unbeatens. UMass will head to scenic Parsons Field to face Northeastern, where both teams will be looking to get their seasons back on track.
