Arizona Rugby To Induct Dave Sitton Into Hall Of Fame

In 2019 the University of Arizona Rugby Club will celebrate 50 Years and at that celebration, the Trustees of the Arizona Rugby Alumni Association will honor legendary former Coach William David Sitton by his induction to the Arizona Rugby Hall of Fame.

The annual Arizona Rugby Dinner and Hall of Fame recognizes members of the UA Rugby community who have realized significant achievements and made lasting contributions to the competitiveness, growth, stature and culture of Wildcat Rugby. They have also honored rugby’s ethos and lasting traditions.

Unique to rugby, the criteria for Arizona transcends competitive achievement. Candidates must also sustain the culture, stature and traditions of rugby – in the ‘Corinthian Spirit.'

Begun in 2016, the Hall of Fame previously inducted stalwart Coach Mike Veth, and player Brad Cox (’76).

Sitton attended the University of Arizona intending to play baseball, but shoulder injuries changed that plan. It was at that time that he discovered rugby. During his senior year, he put in time playing the dual role of rugby coach and player.

After his retirement as a player, Sitton transitioned to coaching rugby at the University of Arizona. The Wildcat program became a model for other collegiate programs to follow. Over the course of his 39-year coaching tenure, he mentored and developed over 1,600 players. Sitton considered this his true lifetime professional achievement.

In addition to his duties at Arizona, Sitton also served as the General Manager and Assistant Coach for the U.S. National Collegiate All-Americans. He co-founded the celebrated Michelob-Continental Rugby Classic tournament, and was the broadcast voice of many signature events in USA Rugby. He also served on the USA Rugby Board of Directors.

Sitton believed that mentoring young men was crucial to the future of our nation and worked to educate them on the value of competition, and living by the golden rule.

Sitton passed away from a pulmonary embolism in 2013, leaving behind many who loved and admired him, especially his two daughters, Olivia and Elizabeth, and his sister, Margie.
