All Americans Train for RugbyTown 7s

The Men’s Collegiate All Americans are in Glendale, Colo. in preparation for their only activity of the summer, the Serevi RugbyTown 7s at Infinity Park.

Head Coach Tony Pacheco has assembled a team that, in his opinion, partially mirrors what the USA senior team is doing. Chiefly, this means height.

“This is the tallest team’s we’ve ever had,” Pacheco told Goff Rugby Report, adding that both USA Coach Mike Friday and Performance Director Alex Magleby have shown interest in fielding a taller USA team. “Mags has said that playing the ball in the air is an area where we as Americans can excel. And we’ve got the players to do it.”

Out on the win are Alex Faison-Donohue of Kutztown, and Josh Anderson of Brigham Young - both are 6-4. Rangy runners populate the team, including Central Washington’s Aladdin Schirmer, who will captain the team, Jack McAuliffe of Navy, Cal star Jake Anderson, and AIC’s Seth Halliman.

“There are a lot of players on this team who are captains or key leaders on their college teams,” said Pacheco. “It helps us as we come together.”

Among those leaders would be St. Mary’s captain Cooper Maloney, and in fact almost all of the players are well-known to college rugby fans. BYU’s Anderson might have been missed on an impressive Cougar squad, but Pacheco said he has the body and the potential. Ian Luciano is another of the lesser-knowns, as he played for New England College and was spotted at the NSCRO tournament in Chester, Pa.

Mason Baum and Keenan Mayfield provide a nice combination of skill and physicality, and in fact, despite being college players in a men’s tournament, the All Americans are expected to hold their own.

“We’ve won the senior all-star 7s before, and the players can handle it,” said Pacheco. “We’ve got a good squad of athletes. I don’t know if we have out-and-out pace, but we have powerful and elusive players who can play in the middle of the field. It will come down to execution.”

The All Americans have already scrimmaged with Glendale and the US Navy team, and will also scrimmage with the Northeast Academy, an outfit populated with college players who have a statement to make, as well.

The Serevi RugbyTown 7s kicks off on Friday and concluded Saturday afternoon.

The games will be streamed live starting at 1pm on Friday here:
